Australia Day

Australia Day is the nation's day to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. In Katherine there are fun and free activities planned for our community to get together and be part of our national day.

On Australia Day Councils, Shires and Communities around Australia present awards (Local Government Australiay Day Awards) to local citizens in recognition of personal achievement contributed to the community.

The Local Government Australia Day Awards were once again held at Katherine Town Council Civic Centre on Tuesday 26th January 2010. The awards categories were:

The Citizen and Young Citizen Awards - recognise personal endeavour, achievement and worthwhile community input from individuals in two age categories. Young Citizen is categorised between the age of 14 and 30 at 26 January, and Citizen of the Year over 30.

The Community Event of the Year Award - this might recognise the achievements of an entire community, or any group within a community. It may be a specific community project which deserves recognition, or the continous work of a particular local organistation, or a record of achievement by a whole City, Town or Shire.

2010 Winners:

Citizen of the Year Winner: Janine Morrow

Young Citizen of the Year Winner: Jessica Wuttke

Communtiy Event of the Year Winner: Teddy Bears Picnic

In a small community like Katherine there are hundreds of people that help us everyday with our kids and sports, through education, host community events, music, the arts, assistance within the environment or animal aid - so let's have a think and nomination them in 2011 because they sure do deserve it!
